Mosquito Lagoon Tarpon on Fly

Posted on August 24th, 2013 by Mike

While everyone else was chasing redfish today, we decided to target Mosquito Lagoon tarpon on fly. From 9am to 10:30 am we had about 10 shots at laid-up tarpon in the 40-120 pound range…no blind cast dredging here. You would have swore that you were in the Keys backcountry.

Two fish were hooked on fly. The first in the 40-pound range and the last was every bit of 120 pounds. Using a 9-weight rod, and lucky for us, the bigger fish chewed through the 60-pound bite tippet in short order. I’d say we were slightly undergunned anyway.

Neither fish was brought boatside…and quite frankly, the bigger fish that was hooked would have been a HUGE chore on the 9-weight.

Quicker camera work would have made for some incredible pictures…we’re still working on it.

An elusive tripletail occupied our time for a while as well, but he escaped the dinner table.
