Starting A Live Bait Fishing Business

If you have decided that the office day job is not for you, you may be interested in starting a fishing business.  There are many types of commercial fishing, but a popular type of fishing as of late is the live bait fishing.

Fishing for live bait can be extremely hard work, as the seas aren’t always calm and the bait doesn’t always hang out where you expect them.

Most live bait fisherman operate center console boats such as Goldline fishing boats or Conch fishing boats.  The boats main features is the vast amount of live well space, with some boats holding over 300 gallons of water.

Baits such as Goggle Eyes are some of the most profitable baits, since they provide good life and do well fishing from kites, deep lines, or flat lines.  During sailfish fishing tournaments live bait such as Goggle Eyes and Threadfin Herrings will cost you a fortune, but may make the difference to beat out the competition.

If you have what it takes to catch live bait and lots of it, the live bait business may be for you.  Each county and inlet has its own restrictions, so you are going to want to check with your local departments before going commercial.

Throwing a cast net over 10 feet and using sabiki’s over 6 feet is the norm, night in and out.  The weekends provide your most profits.

If you are in business for live bait by yourself, we recommend starting an s-corporation.  There are many benefits to an s-corporation.  Talk to your accountant about the tax savings and laws surrounding s-corp status.
