March went out with a bang. 16 year old Alex Lambert fought a tarpon for 2 hours and 35 minutes before scoring the release. His fishing family also caught 1 other tarpon and a big jack.
The Pemberton family fished a couple nights latter and had double tarpon action. Jeanne caught a tarpon of about 60 pounds to start the evening. The next hook up was a double header with Cindy catching a tarpon in the 125 pound class while Tom caught one about 100 pounds. Not to make things easy, Cindy then anchored another double tarpon catch by beating a 100 pound silver king while Jeanne scored a tarpon in the 80 pound class. Cindy was an angler to reckon with at about 100 pounds and being over 50 years young.
Fenton joined the Cohen brothers for our first day trip of the week and last trip of March. Fenton scored with 2 sail fish, several dolphin and some small bottom fish.
April started with the first annual Fisher Island Sailfish Tournament. We caught a sailfish, 54 pound cobia, 10 pound dolphin, and a few schoolie sized dolphin.
April 2nd found us fishing with the power house angling team of Don and Sandy Blake. Sandy wrestled a beautiful 29 pound permit away from the wreck and sharks on 12 pound tackle. She also caught a 16 pound african pompano on 8 pound tackle. Don and Sandy each caught permit on 20 and Don added a barracuda on 8 to fill the day. Sharks and the wreck beat us for a dozen other permit.
Joe and Brooke joined us for the next 3 days. Fishing Government Cut on Monday Brooke caught 3 tarpon from 60 to 110 pounds and Joe scored with a 31 pound permit. We fished the Yamaha/ Contender Miami Billfish Tournament with Steve Nichols and his 18 year old daughter Amanda. At the close of fishing on Friday we held first place in the team category, family and Amanda was top lady angler. As the tournament proceeded through the weekend, we fell to be one of the top 15 boats out of 108 boats and 495 anglers. We alos enjoyed the Nichols position of first place family and Amanda won as Top Lady Angler. Amanda scored with 4 sailfish, a 13 pound dolphin and 4 king mackerel from 10 to 16 pounds. Steve worked as backup angler and caught 2 sailfish. It was a super weekend of fishing.
With 30 knot winds on Monday we were glad we only planned an evening fishing trip. Ron caught a tarpon in the 110 pound class and we jumped a couple more with the Tony Burkholder party. Tony, wife Linda, son Derrick and Ron joined us for the afternoon on Tuesday. With continuing 30 knot winds, we fished the bay. We caught and released tarpon of 125, 90 and 80 pounds along with a couple ladyfish. This was the first time in my 40 year career that we came close to losing a tarpon to a hungry shark. A 10 foot hammerhead tried his best to eat the 90 pound tarpon we caught and quickly released.
